Descendants of Phillip Wilhelmus BITZER
Contributed by: Carolyn (Barnhart) Worthington
First Generation
1. Phillip Wilhelmus Bitzer. Born Before 14 Feb 1737 in Hachenburg,
Oberwesterwald, Hessen-Nassau, Germany. Died 9 Nov 1823 in Colerain Twp,
Ross, OH. Buried in White Church Cem, Hallsville, Ross Co, OH.
NOTES FOR PHILLIP: This family is no longer found in Hachenburg after 1740.
It is believed that Wilhelmus is either born elsewhere or is either Wilhelm
Frederich b 1735 or Phllip Wilhelm b 1737. In early records of the family
his date of birth was 1737. However the DAR says 1743. (See Daughters of the
American Revolution Membership Application (Mrs. Mabel Heffner Towers)
#429721(Ref#2) He left no will.
He married Maria Fronica Cofin. Born 21 Jun 1748 in Hunterdon Co, NJ. Died 10
Jun 1825 in Colerain, Ross, OH. Buried in Salem "White" Reform Cem,
Hallsville, Ross, OH. They had the following children:
2 i. Conrad Betzer
NOTES FOR MARIA: Cofin is probably the female's surname. This is common
practice. Her father's would have been Cof under normal Hessen usage at that
time as I have understood it (J.T. Betzer). In nearby Somerset County of NJ
there were several Cof (Kauf) names at this time period. Also when the
Bitzers migrated to Northumberland Co., PA. they settled in East Buffalo TWP
(now Union Co), there also were several Cof families. Later in Ohio the same
Cof families moved to the same area as the Bitzers in the same time frame.
Married Wilhelm Bitzer in the German Reform Church of Hunterdon Co New
Jersey.(Ref. #2 (according to Wilma Burt).
Second Generation 2. Conrad Betzer. Son of Phillip Wilhelmus Bitzer & Maria Fronica Cofin. Born 4 Aug 1773 in NJ. Died 1861 in Ross County, OH. Buried in White Church Cemetery - Hallsville, Ross Co.,
NOTES FOR CONRAD: Data from: Mildred Evaline Betzer Heuston - THE DESCENDANTS
OF CONRAD BETZER IN AMERICA - Tishimongo, OK,1972, and "History of Ross and
Highland Counties, 1796-1880, Williams Bros, Cleveland, OH
Witnesses at Conrad's infant Baptism at German Reform Church, Alexandria,
Hunterdon Co.: Conrad & Margarete Casper - Rev. Joseph Dallicker, pastor.
Baptism 26 September 1773; birth 4 Aug 1773. The family went to East Buffalo
Township of Northumberland Co., obviously sometime after the birth of Jacob
who was baptized at the Dutch Reform Church at Lebanon, N.J. 17 June 1786 and
whose birthdate is recorded as 6 May 1986. Jacob Neitzer and his wife Anna
Maria Apgar were the witnesses.
It would seem that Conrad had preceded his family to Ohio coming to what is
now Chillicothe, OH in the fall of 1796. The Bitzers had hired a person who
had explored this area the year before and then guided them in 1796. The
(Wilhelm) Bitzers moved to Kingston to a grant of land in the spring of 1797.
This was probably land granted to Wilhelm for his service in the
Revolutionary Army. They moved to the Colerain area in 1801. Sources 7 & 8,
9 above shed some light on the family but have erred about the family origin.
#9 above says of Conrad: ". . . in the autumn of 1796 Conrad Bitzer and wife
came from Berks, Co., PA, by way of Portsmouth and Chillicothe, and passed
but a single house on their journey up the Scioto River. They lived in the
vicinity of Kingston until 1801, when they located on the west half of
section eighteen in Colerain Township. Here in the same year was born
Elizabeth, probably the first white child born in the township." It is
possible that Wilhelm's family at some time lived over in Bucks Co., Pa. but
they baptized their children in Alexandria Twp. New Jersey. We have found no
primary records linking them to Bucks, Co., PA. Later other Bitzers lived
in the Allen Town area but they were only remotely related to Wilhelm (if at
all). (JTB) In the same source (#9 above) it states: "Conrad, Bitzer, . . .
was born at Buffalo Valley, Pa. . . . He was one of the sturdy pioneers of
Colerain township, and developed a farm in the heart of the forest; he died
at the age of ninety-two years, retaining almost until the very last the
remarkable vigor of his youth."
He married Catherine Van Gundy, daughter of Peter, II Van Gundy & Fronick, 1796. Born 1775 in PA. Buried in White Church Cemetery - Hallsville, Ross Co., OH.

- viii. Jacob Betzer

NOTES FOR CATHERINE: The name of the father is not known nor is there is an
exact date of Present data suggests Catharine may have been living in the
home of a Joseph Van Gundy who was born about 1763. There was an unnamed
female born in 1775 in the household. Nearby were other Van Gundy's
Christian, and John. It may be that Catharine was the sister of these three
brothers. Wills and deeds establish that Joseph did have brothers so named.
Joseph's family is well established by other primary sources. Catharine was
only 12 years his junior so must be a sister or other relative if indeed she
is unnamed one.
